Not So Easy

Yesterday Ken finally caught a salmon and some anglers said they saw some fish. One of them saw a big salmon making head-and-tail. We were full of happy expectations.

But salmon fishing is not so easy. It has been very fine since the morning today. In early morning, the temperature was 4 ℃ and the water temperature 4 ℃, too. Probably because it was terribly cold during last night, the water in the daytime has decreased to the lowest level in this season.

But the volume of water still keeps from 320 m³/sec;to 200 m³/sec. Salmon can come upstream when it drops under 150 m³/sec. Now there is no salmon upstream. Fine weather will last for a while. If it becomes warmer, which promotes snow melting, the water level will gradually decrease after repeatedly going up and down.

We have almost no chance to fish Bridge Pool, the famous good spot upstream, during our stay. That means we can fish only downstream of downstream.

Today we have seen no fish but just waited for salmon to come in vain while we are making the fly drifting. Yesterday’s expectation has gone. We are afraid that current situation is as bad as 25 years ago. What a shame!

There is no tactic without fish upstream or even downstream. The only strategy is to be patient and avoid a waste of energy while we are waiting.
