After 6th Hooking without Catch
In early morning the water volume fell below 300 m³/sec. Although we were still discouraged by yesterday`s failure in catch after hooking, we pull ourselves together on this last day.
In the morning we spent time with NFC`s Manfred Raguse and a professional photographer. The arrangement of taking pictures had repeatedly been cancelled, sometimes due to our negligence and sometimes theirs. We finally carried out our promise. Fishing salmon is the first priority during fishing and almost all promises can wait.
We wished to get one more salmon today. We had a vain hope of catching fish in front of the camera, but could not meet any school. Now afternoon fishing was our last chance.
In the afternoon the water volume fell to 220 m³/sec. Around 4 p.m. Ken got a strange contact again at the top of the beat. After several minute fighting the hook came off. It was the 6th failure.
He almost had a feeling that he should get rid of his ill luck at the shrine in Japan.
Only 2 hours were left for us. Soon our fishing in Gaula in this season is over! Putting himself together, he made the fly drifting from the top of the beat again. Fortunately a school of salmon was just coming. A salmon bit his fly .
This time he got a usual good hooking. Mary Anne dashed from the bottom of the pool again but high water stopped her from crossing to the next bank at the top of the beat. She had no choice but to set the camera at the bank this side, a little bit farther away him.
He was extremely careful of hooking. He spent more time in landing than usual. It was a salmon of 20 lb estimated.
He caught the first salmon, then failed in catch after hooking 6 times and finally got this one. It was not as big as ones he was aiming at. But we were satisfied with catching it under such a tough situation.
Mary Anne also kept fishing, waiting for that school of salmon but they were already gone.
This season’s fishing gave a lot of problems to solve. Good ending did not wipe out those problems. Ken has started considering his new strategy for next season and will get one through trial and error. In every season Gaula gives new tasks to Ken, a frequent angler for these 17 years.
Well, our ending phrase is always “That’s Salmon Fishing!”
